Matt Treanor hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a dramatic 12-9 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Treanor’s two-out homer to left field off Jason Bulger (0-1) marked Kansas City’s third straight final at-bat victory in the four-game series. Tim Collins (1-0) picked up the victory by striking out five during three innings of shutout relief.
Kansas City averted losing prior to extra innings when Wilson Betemit hit a game-tying, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth after Angels closer Fernando Rodney walked the bases loaded with one out.
Bobby Abreu reached base seven times on five hits and two walks for the Angels. Abreu hit a two-run homer in the seventh that gave the Angels their first lead of the contest at 7-6.
Howie Kendrick hit two solo homers, and Maicer Izturis and Alberto Callaspo added solo homers. All three had three of Los Angeles’ 19 hits.
Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler also homered for the Royals, who led 5-0 after two innings. Angles starter Scott Kazmir lasted just five outs, surrendering five runs and five hits.
