Lance Berkman belted a three-run homer and Ryan Theriot and Matt Holliday had two-run singles as the St. Louis Cardinals salvaged the finale of a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a 12-2 home triumph on Thursday.

Philadelphia starter Roy Oswalt (4-6) exited the contest after two innings with tightness in his lower back. The veteran permitted four runs on five hits to suffer his sixth loss in his last seven decisions.

Jon Jay launched his fifth homer of the season and rookie Tony Cruz collected his first two RBIs of his career with a pair of run-scoring singles for St. Louis, which posted just its third victory in 12 outings.

Chris Carpenter (2-7) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings to record his first win since May 10. He also struck out seven to improve to 6-2 in his career against Philadelphia.

Carlos Ruiz belted a solo homer and St. Louis native Ryan Howard had an RBI single for Philadelphia, which suffered just its third loss in 12 outings.
