Jimmy Rollins homered and drove in three runs and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game sweep with an 8-4 victory over the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard each homered for Philadelphia, which registered its best offensive day since a 10-2 win over Atlanta on April 9. The Phillies scored three times in the first off Joe Saunders (0-3), and Rollins’ first homer of the season in the fifth, a towering shot that landed about eight rows into the left field seats, made it 6-1.

Cole Hamels (3-1) did the rest. The lefthander allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings and struck out eight while helping the Phillies avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season. He got plenty of support from a slumping offense that had scored more than four runs just once in the last 14 games.

Chris Young hit a pair of home runs, but it wasn’t enough for Arizona. Young’s second homer of the game off Antonio Bastardo cut the lead to 7-4 in the eighth.

Howard answered the following half inning with a solo homer over the 413 sign in center field, his first home run in 14 games.

Arizona put runners on the corners in the ninth against Ryan Madson, who is serving as the closer until Brad Lidge and Jose Contreras return, but the righthander retired pinch hitter Miguel Montero on a groundout to end it.

The Phillies lost catcher Carlos Ruiz to back stiffness after just one inning.
