Roy Halladay survived a rocky ninth inning as Philadelphia beat Washington 3-2 on Wednesday at Nationals Park.
Halladay (2-0), who allowed six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts, was closing in on his 20th career shutout when Washington struck for two runs on RBI singles by Laynce Nix and Danny Espinosa. But with runners on first and second, Halladay struck out Matt Stairs and Pudge Rodriguez to pick up his first complete game of the season and 59th career.
Philadelphia got on the board against Washington starter John
Lannan in the fourth on Ben Francisco’s grounder to shortstop. The Phils added two in the
fifth when Placido Polanco singled in a run to shallow center field and
Ryan Howard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Lannan (1-1) allowed three runs - two earned - and six hits in six innings and absorbed the loss.
