John Mayberry Jr. ripped a pinch-hit RBI single to center field, capping a furious three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies opened the season with a 5-4 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday afternoon.
Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard opened the ninth with back-to-back singles against Brandon Lyon (0-1), and Rollins scored on a one-out single by Ben Francisco. Philadelphia loaded the bases on a base hit by Carlos Ruiz, and Wilson Valdez followed with another single to plate Howard with the tying run. Mayberry then drove Francisco home with the Phillies' sixth hit of the inning.
Danys Baez (1-0) got the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning for Philadelphia.
The Astros had taken a 1-0 lead against reigning Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay in the top of the sixth inning and added three runs against the Phillies' bullpen one inning later, two on a one-out triple by Michael Bourn. Philadelphia cut the deficit to 4-2 in its half of the seventh before completing the comeback in its final at-bat.
Houston starter Brett Myers allowed just three hits and one earned run in seven innings of work against his former team while also adding a pair of hits at the plate.
