John Buck belted a three-run home run and Javier Vazquez tossed six innings to lead the Florida Marlins to a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of their three-game series Friday at Great American Ball Park.
Buck's three-run shot was the biggest blow in a five-run first inning in which Vazquez helped himself with an RBI single.
Vazquez (2-2) allowed four runs on four hits over six innings while both striking out and walking three. Leo Nunez pitched the ninth for his eighth save, allowing two runs but struck out Jay Bruce to strand the tying run at second.
The Reds did all their damage with two home runs off Vazquez. Bruce hit his fourth, a solo shot in the first, and Jeremy Hermida hit a three-run blast in the fourth, his first of the season.
Hanley Ramirez, who was in a 3-for-25 slump, went 2-for-5 with two RBIs for the Marlins.
Reds starter Travis Wood (1-3) was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits over 3 1-3 innings. Wood has allowed six or more runs in three of his six starts.
