Jason Heyward hit a grand slam and the Atlanta Braves held on for a 5-4 victory over the host Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
Atlanta, which increased its lead to 9 1/2 games over San Francisco in the National League wild card race, broke open a scoreless game with a five-run fourth. Alex Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded before Heyward's blast to center field against Casey Coleman (2-6).
Alfonso Soriano hit a solo homer to start a four-run fifth for the Cubs, who also got a two-run double from Aramis Ramirez. Chicago had the bases loaded with one out in the seventh before George Sherrill struck out Carlos Peña and Arodys Vizcaino got Marlon Byrd to ground out to end the threat.
Atlanta starter Mike Minor (4-2) gave up four runs, six hits and struck out five in five innings. Four relievers combined to hold the Cubs to three hits the rest of the way, with Craig Kimbrel working around a two-out Ramirez single in the ninth for his 40th save.
Coleman also pitched five innings, and yielded five runs, five hits, walked two and struck out four.
