Jeff Mathis' sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Los Angeles Angels a 4-3 win over the visiting Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
With one out in the 12th inning, Vernon Wells broke a 1-for-26 slump with a single off Chad Durbin (0-1), the Indians’ fifth pitcher of the game. After Alberto Callaspo walked, Wells moved to third on a wild pitch. Mark Trumbo was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Mathis followed with his fly ball to center field.
Hisanori Takahashi (1-0) threw two scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Indians forced extra innings in the eighth when Shin-Soo Choo’s groundout scored Michael Brantley, who finished 3-for-5.
The Angels took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when Howie Kendrick led off against Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco with a double and came all the way around on shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera’s throwing error. After Bobby Abreu walked, Torii Hunter blasted an 0-1 pitch for his third home run.
Carrasco allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings for Cleveland, which saw its eight-game winning streak end with a 2-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday.
Ervin Santana started for the Angels and allowed three runs on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over seven innings.
