Mark Teixeira hit his sixth career grand slam and Nick Swisher added a three-run blast in a nine-run third inning as the New York Yankees pounded the visiting Oakland Athletics 17-7 on Friday.
Derek Jeter added three RBIs and Curtis Granderson drove in a pair for the Yankees, whose starters each scored at least once.
Trevor Cahill (8-9) is on his way to becoming one of the better pitchers in the American League but entered with an 0-3 record and a 9.72 ERA in three previous starts against New York. The 23-year old righthander suffered more of the same Friday, giving up five runs in the second and failing to retire a batter in the third.
Cahill surrendered Swisher’s blast and two more singles before yielding to Michael Wuertz, who walked in two runs in front of Teixeira. The slugger took an 0-1 changeup and put just enough air under it to get it over the right field wall for his 26th homer.
The offense bailed out starter Phil Hughes, who allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings to suffer his worst start since coming off the disabled list earlier this month. Hector Noesi (2-0) worked 3 2/3 scoreless frames to grab the win.
