The New York Yankees earned a 4-0 win over the Cleveland Indians Saturday afternoon but lost another key pitcher in Bartolo Colon.
The resurgent starter exited in the seventh inning after straining his left hamstring while covering a groundout at first base. It’s another crushing blow to New York’s beat-up staff, which lost reliever Joba Chamberlain earlier in the week. Colon (5-3) was on pace for his second complete game shutout in three starts after allowing just two hits and and a walk while striking out six on 83 pitches over 6 2/3 innings.
Of course, nearly every recent opposing pitcher has looked good against Cleveland, which has lost 13 of 17 and is hanging on to the American League Central division by a thread.
New York’s Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez took Cleveland starter Mitch Talbot deep, each launching solo home runs for the second straight game.
Talbot (2-3) allowed two earned runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings before being ejected for plunking Rodriguez.
Mark Teixeira homered in the eighth off Vinnie Pestano. That was more than enough for David Robertson and Boone Logan, who tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to secure the victory.
