Curtis Granderson and Alex Rodriguez homered as the New York Yankees got ticked off - then teed off - in an 11-7 win over the slumping Cleveland Indians in the opener of a four-game set Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
After taking a beating on the scoreboard and a bruising in the batter’s box during a sweep by the Boston Red Sox, New York finally fired back at an opposing pitcher. Cleveland’s Fausto Carmona plunked Mark Teixeira in the bottom of the second inning just three days after Boston’s Jon Lester pulled the same stunt.
Already leading 4-0, Teixeira furiously shouted at Carmona, prompting both benches to clear, though no one was ejected.
Teixeira went on to drive in three runs to lift the Yankees to easily their highest run total of June in besting the Indians for the 11th time in the last 14 tries.
Carmona (3-8) took his fifth straight loss, charged with six earned runs on eight hits in four innings as Cleveland fell to 4-12 in its last 16.
Ivan Nova (5-4) gave up two runs on four hits with a season-high six strikeouts in seven innings before the battered bullpen limped to the finish line.
