Carlos Quentin went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs as the Chicago White Sox battered Tigers ace Justin Verlander and coasted to an 8-2 victory at Detroit on Friday evening.
The White Sox got to Verlander (12-5) in the third inning, when Juan Pierre drove in the game's first run with a bunt single and scored on a two-run single by Adam Dunn. Quentin added an RBI hit to make it 4-0.
Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the fourth to cut the deficit in half, but Quentin restored Chicago's four-run lead with an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth inning and a single in the seventh that plated Paul Konerko.
Gordon Beckham capped the White Sox scoring with a two-run single in the seventh inning. The Tigers failed to get any closer, leaving the bases loaded in the eighth.
Gavin Floyd (7-9) worked 7 2/3 innings for the win, allowing one earned run on six hits. Floyd struck out five and walked one. Verlander, who lost for just the second time since April, allowed five runs - four earned - in six innings. He surrendered seven hits and walked two while collecting six strikeouts.
Detroit outfielder Austin Jackson was a late scratch from the lineup due to a sore left wrist.
