James Shields pitched a complete game, leading host Tampa Bay to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday evening.
Shields (1-1) surrendered just four hits and one walk while striking out nine. He needed only 105 pitches to finish off the game.
After a slow start, Tampa Bay (8-9) has won seven of its last eight games.
The Rays grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Chicago starter John Danks (0-2) when Ben Zobrist scored on a Felipe Lopez groundout. An RBI single by A.J. Pierzynski pulled Chicago even in the top of the fifth, but Tampa Bay regained the upper hand in the bottom of the inning when Sean Rodriguez plated Zobrist with a one-out triple.
Danks scattered seven hits while striking out five in seven innings for Chicago (7-10), which has lost six in a row.
