Kyle Lohse pitched five scoreless innings and Nick Punto and David Freese each contributed in their returns to the lineup as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals got the better of the Baltimore Orioles, 6-2, on Tuesday.
Matt Holliday hit his 10th homer and Colby Rasmus added his seventh for the Cardinals, who snapped a three-game slide and won for just the fourth time in the last 13 games.
St. Louis used Monday’s off day to make some roster moves, activating Punto and Freese after lengthy spells on the disabled list. While neither player will be mistaken for Albert Pujols, they did do their part on Tuesday, combining to go 4-for-8 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Lohse (8-4) allowed four hits in snapping a four-start winless streak. The righthander had only thrown 69 pitches but did not return following a 28-minute rain delay. Lance Lynn took over following the rain and struck out five in two scoreless frames.
Rookie Zach Britton (6-6) started for Baltimore and surrendered three straight RBI singles in the second as the Cardinals took the lead. Britton yielded Rasmus’ blast just before the delay and did not return.
