Zach Britton pitched six strong innings in his major league debut and J.J. Hardy doubled in a pair of runs as the visiting Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday.
Mark Reynolds added two RBI doubles and Matt Wieters singled in a run for the Orioles, who allowed a total of three runs in the series.
Britton (1-0), the organization's top prospect who was called up to make the start when Brian Matusz was placed on the disabled list, looked right at home in a major league uniform. He struck out six while allowing one run and three hits in six innings. The 23-year old left-hander walked three and surrendered his lone run on an RBI bunt single in the third by Elliot Johnson.
Wieters put Baltimore on the board when he drove in Brian Roberts in the first inning. But the Orioles could not get anything else done against Wade Davis (0-1) until the seventh, when they finally chased the right-hander with a three-run rally - capped by Hardy’s double. Davis yielded four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Evan Longoria sat out for Tampa Bay after being placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique.
