Brett Lawrie's walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning propelled the Toronto Blue Jays to a 1-0 win over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday afternoon.
Lawrie launched an offering from Dan Wheeler (2-2) over the wall in left-center field for his eighth home run and 22nd RBI in 30 major-league games.
The loss was a costly one for the Red Sox, who now trail New York by 2 1/2 games in the race for top spot in the American League East. The Yankees fended off Baltimore 11-10.
Shawn Camp (3-3) earned the win in relief as Toronto ended a three-game losing skid.
Forced to scramble after starter Josh Beckett left in the fourth inning with a sprained right ankle, the Red Sox bullpen crafted seven innings of scoreless relief before Lawrie's heroics. Toronto had a chance to win it in the 10th inning, but Jonathan Papelbon struck out Adam Lind with the bases loaded to end the threat.
Toronto starter Henderson Alvarez was sensational for the second straight start. The 21-year-old limited Boston to four hits over six scoreless frames, extending his shutout streak to 15 innings.
