Jon Lester pitched eight sharp innings and the Boston Red Sox used a four-run outburst in the fifth to defeat the host Chicago White Sox 10-2 on Saturday night.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer and Kevin Youkilis added a solo shot for the Red Sox, who beat the White Sox for the first time in five tries this season.
Lester (11-4) yielded four hits, struck out eight and walked one in his second start since coming off the disabled list. The All-Star lefthander has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts.
Philip Humber (8-7) matched Lester through four innings, surrendering only an infield single. But the Boston offense broke through in the fifth as Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in a run with a double, and Marco Scutaro and Dustin Pedroia each added a sacrifice fly. Youkilis’ RBI single capped the rally and chased Humber.
Gonzalez and Youkilis hit back-to-back homers during a five-run uprising in the ninth to give the Red Sox some breathing room.
Paul Konerko and Gordon Beckham hit solo homers for the White Sox, for had won 14 of their previous 16 meetings with Boston.
