Mark Trumbo homered, Bobby Abreu drove in three runs and the visiting Los Angeles Angels pounded their former ace John Lackey en route to an 11-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, mere hours after a marathon contest that drained both bullpens.
Howie Kendrick and Alberto Callaspo each had two RBIs for the Angels, who beat Lackey (2-4) for the first time in five tries less than 24 hours after ending a six-game losing streak to Boston.
Both teams had to be weary after Wednesday’s 13-inning affair that ended at 2:45 a.m. ET due to a 2-hour, 35-minute rain delay. The Angels, however, showed no ill effects at the plate. Los Angeles scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The highlight of their impressive offensive display was five straight two-out singles off Lackey in the fourth.
The righthander entered 4-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts against his former team, but he was rocked for eight runs and 10 hits in four-plus innings. Trumbo's towering two-run homer three rows deep into the Green Monster signaled the end of the day for Lackey. It was a stunningly bad outing for a Red Sox starting pitcher. Boston starters had allowed two runs or less in 16 of the last 18 games.
Joel Pineiro (1-0) benefited from the Angels' offensive outburst. The righthander allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings in his second start since returning from shoulder soreness.
Held hitless for the first 6 1/3 innings of Wednesday’s loss, the Red Sox didn’t record a hit until Carl Crawford drilled a line drive off the back of Pineiro in the fourth. The lone bright spot for Boston came in the eighth, when Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 14 games.
