Bobby Abreu’s two-run single in the 13th inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox in a game that ended at 2:45 a.m. ET on Thursday.

The game was delayed by rain in the fifth inning for more than 2½ hours.

Abreu smacked a single to right field off Boston’s eighth pitcher - Daisuke Matsuzaka (2-3).

Boston tied the game with two outs in the ninth on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury and nearly won it in the 12th on a wall-ball double by Kevin Youkilis, but Marco Scutaro was thrown out at the plate.

Trevor Bell (1-0) worked four innings in relief for the win.

The Angels' Vernon Wells opened the scoring in the seventh with a two-run homer.

Led by Ervin Santana, Los Angeles kept Boston hitless until Jed Lowrie singled in the seventh. Santana left after four innings with seven strikeouts before the rain delay.

Boston cut the deficit to 2-1 in the eighth when Adrian Gonzalez scored Jason Varitek on an infield hit.

The Angels made it 3-1 in the ninth with a sacrifice fly by Erick Aybar, but Boston scored on a wild pitch in the ninth. Mike Cameron was thrown out at third base on the play for the first out of the inning, but Carl Crawford followed with a double and Ellsbury tied the game 3-3 with a two-out single against Jordan Walden.

Josh Beckett started for Boston and allowed one hit in 4 1/3 innings before the delay.
