Johnny Damon drove in two runs to back the fine pitching of David Price as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays defeated the woeful Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday night.
Price (1-2) pitched out of a couple jams and allowed five hits and two runs in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out three. Kyle Farnsworth pitched the ninth for his second save.
The Red Sox (2-9) led 1-0 after a solo homer by Darnell McDonald in the third inning.
Tampa Bay (3-8) scored three times on four singles and a fielder’s choice in the fifth. Sam Fuld tied the game with a slow roller to first as Adrian Gonzalez' throw home was late and Damon followed with a two-run single to make it 3-1.
Jed Lowrie cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI double in the sixth inning, but Boston couldn’t get the equalizer and fell into last place in the American League East.
Jon Lester (0-2) struck out eight and allowed seven hits and three runs in seven innings.
