Andres Torres’ pinch-hit, run-scoring single in the eighth inning broke a scoreless tie and helped Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants to a 2-0 victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.
Nate Schierholtz led off the Giants eighth with a double before Torres singled to center for his first RBI of the season. Torres later scored an insurance run on Aubrey Huff’s sacrifice fly.
Zito (3-0) outdueled Adam Wainwright by striking out 10 and allowing just three hits and three walks in eight innings. Zito lowered his earned-run average to 1.32 while beating St. Louis for the first time in five career decisions.
Brian Wilson recorded the final three outs for his fourth save of the season. Matt Holliday singled with two outs before Wilson retired Yadier Molina on a grounder.
Wainwright (3-1) allowed just four hits over the first seven innings before being touched up for the two eighth-inning runs. He struck out seven and walked one while pitching his second consecutive complete game.
