The San Diego Padres needed every positional player on the roster to defeat the Washington Nationals 3-2 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon.
Backup catcher Nick Hundley was summoned to pinch-hit in the bottom of the 11th with two outs. He was the last available position player for San Diego. With Lance Zawadzki reaching the at-bat before on an Adam Kennedy error, Hundley singled off Washington’s Matt Capps to left field to end the game.
Washington reliever Sean Burnett (0-3) was responsible for Zawadzki and suffered the loss. He pitched 2/3 innings, giving up two hits, one walk and the unearned run.
Luke Gregerson (1-1) got the win by striking out three over two perfect innings.
Both starters pitched well but were long gone by the time the game was decided. Jon Garland went seven strong innings for San Diego, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks. He stuck out four.
Washington’s starter Livan Hernandez also gave up two runs. He yielded eight hits, walked none and struck out four in 6 1/3.
The bullpens were astounding today, allowing a combined five hits and just the one unearned run after the sixth inning.
The loss spoils a fantastic day for Ryan Zimmerman, who hit two home runs in the game.
He opened the scoring for Washington with a solo home run in the first inning.
San Diego took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Yorvit Torrealba scored a run on a fielder’s choice, then Tony Gwynn Jr. singled to score Matt Stairs.
Zimmerman hit his second homer of the game in the sixth to tie it at 2-2. The shots were his ninth and tenth of the season.
The National League West-leading Padres have won six of their last eight games.
