Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a second-inning home run and three San Diego pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout as the host Padres blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 on Tuesday night.
Hairston hit the two-out homer to left field off Adam Wainwright (6-3) as San Diego increased its National League West lead to two games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The homer was Hairston’s first of the season.
Jon Garland (6-2) went seven innings and scattered six hits and two walks. Garland struck out seven while winning his sixth consecutive decision.
Mike Adams pitched a perfect eighth for San Diego. St. Louis put two runners on base in the ninth before Heath Bell retired Yadier Molina on a grounder to shortstop for his 13th save of the season.
Wainwright matched his career-high with 12 strikeouts. He gave up just four hits and one walk.
Albert Pujols did go 3-for-4 in a losing effort for the Cardinals.
San Diego’s defense turned three double plays.
