Mat Latos pitched a one-hit shutout and singled in the game’s only run as the San Diego Padres blanked the host San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Thursday afternoon.
The only hit off Latos was Eli Whiteside’s infield single leading off the sixth inning. The ball caromed off Latos and toward third baseman Chase Headley while Whiteside narrowly beat Headley’s throw.
Latos (3-3) struck out six and didn’t walk a batter. He faced 28 batters, one over the minimum, while hurling his first career shutout.
The 22-year-old Latos outdueled Jonathan Sanchez as San Diego improved to 6-0 on the season against the Giants.
Latos’ two-out single to right field in the fifth inning scored Lance Zawadzki, who had doubled, for the only run.
It was the second time this season that Latos and Sanchez have engaged in a top-flight pitchers’ duel. Latos bested Sanchez 1-0 in San Diego on April 20.
Sanchez (2-3) allowed three hits and one walk in eight innings while striking out five. He has given up just four hits in 15 innings in the two losses to the Padres, a team he no-hit in 2009.
