Adam Wainwright tossed seven strong innings and Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep with a 9-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Matt Holliday also homered, Aaron Miles drove in three runs and Brendan Ryan went 3-for-3 and scored three times for the Cardinals, who have won 10 of their last 11 home games.
Coming off his worst outing of the season against the New York Mets on Tuesday, Wainwright (15-6) returned to form vs. Pittsburgh, allowing just one run and six hits without issuing a walk. The right-hander, who struck out five, is 11-0 with a 1.22 ERA in 12 starts at Busch Stadium in 2010.
Wainwright worked out of a jam in the opening inning. Andrew McCutchen and Jose Tabata started the frame with singles, but Neil Walker was called out for interference after bunting and Wainwright struck out Garrett Jones and Pedro Alvarez.
Pittsburgh did break through in the second on Ronny Cedeno's RBI single, but Miles' sacrifice fly in the third evened the game at 1-1. St. Louis took a commanding lead with five runs in the fifth, with Wainwright helping his own cause with an RBI single and Pujols capping the burst with his 25th blast of the year.
Holliday highlighted a three-run eighth with his 20th homer, a solo shot that led off the inning.
Zach Duke (5-10) was tagged for six runs and seven hits in five innings, ending his personal two-game winning streak.
Tabata extended his hitting streak to 12 games with two hits for the Pirates, who have lost 28 of their last 32 road games and eight of 10 overall. Pittsburgh scored just two runs over 28 innings in the series.
