Mat Latos made a successful return from injury and the San Diego Padres posted a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.
Latos was making his first start since coming off the disabled list with a strained muscle in his left side. He suffered the injury stifling a sneeze, but the only thing he held in check on Saturday was the Pirates’ offense.
Latos (11-4) allowed two runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out seven and yielded two walks. Three relievers combined to keep the scoreboard clean the rest of the way.
San Diego did its damage late, scoring three runs in the sixth and five more in the eighth. Everth Cabrera and Oscar Salazar each finished with a pair of RBIs and Chase Headley had two hits and an RBI in the win.
Jeff Karstens (2-6) took the loss, allowing four runs and seven hits in six frames.
Jose Tabata and Delwyn Young each homered for Pittsburgh.
