Shortstop Danny Espinosa cranked out two homers, including his first career grand slam, and knocked in six runs as the Washington Nationals pounded the New York Mets 13-3 on Monday afternoon.
Espinosa, who was filling in for the injured Ian Desmond (left hamstring), finished with four hits on the day. He is 9-for-16 with three home runs, two doubles, and 10 RBIs over the first five games of his MLB career.
Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann gave up three hits and one earned run over four innings and Scott Olsen (4-8) came on to throw four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.
New York starter Mike Pelfrey (13-9) was tagged for six earned runs on five hits in just 3 2/3 innings to take the loss.
The Mets had a 3-1 lead before the Nationals erupted for five runs in the fifth inning. Ivan Rodriguez had a double and three RBIs while to pace the Nationals 12-hit day.
