David Wright had three hits and Mike Pelfrey won his eighth game of the season as the New York Mets cooled down the host San Diego Padres 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Wright hit his first home run since May 15 and had his third consecutive multi-hit game to fuel New York’s 10-hit attack.
San Diego struggled against Pelfrey one day after scoring a Petco Park-record 18 runs. Pelfrey (8-1) gave up one run and four hits and struck out a season-high eight batters while winning his fourth straight start.
The Padres scored once off Francisco Rodriguez in the ninth and had the winning run at the plate before Rodriguez struck out Jerry Hairston Jr. and Chris Denorfia for his 10th save of the season.
Wright’s solo homer in the sixth gave the Mets a 2-0 lead.
David Eckstein doubled home Tony Gwynn in the bottom of the inning to get San Diego on the board before New York first baseman Ike Davis slammed a booming two-run homer over the center-field fence in the seventh.
San Diego starter Wade LeBlanc (2-4) lost his fourth consecutive start. LeBlanc allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Padres catcher Nick Hundley went 3-for-4, including a run-scoring single in the ninth.
