Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley belted solo homers and Jon Garland tossed five-plus strong innings as the San Diego Padres salvaged the finale of a three-game series with a 7-3 triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Ryan Ludwick and Miguel Tejada ripped two-run doubles and David Eckstein added an RBI single for NL West-leading San Diego (74-49), which avoided being swept for the first time since dropping a three-game set to the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 14-16.
The early offense was more than enough for Garland (13-8). The 30-year-old right-hander allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Four relievers combined to preserve the victory for the Padres, who extended their lead to six full games over the second-place San Francisco Giants.
Ryan Braun launched a two-run homer and added an RBI single and Rickie Weeks scored twice for Milwaukee (59-65), which saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.
Manny Parra (3-10) struggled from the onset in this one. The 27-year-old left-hander permitted seven runs and eight hits in six innings to take the loss.
