Craig Counsell’s grand slam capped a 10-run first inning as the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Washington Nationals for an 11-7 victory on Sunday.
Washington starter Jason Marquis (0-2) faced seven batters in the first inning and couldn’t get anyone out. He gave up seven runs on four hits, walked one and hit two.
Marquis walked Ryan Braun with the bases loaded and gave up an RBI single to Casey McGehee for a 2-0 lead. The right-hander then hit Jim Edmonds and gave up a single to Gregg Zaun to make it 4-0. Jose Batista came on with the bases loaded, and Carlos Gomez’s infield single followed by pitcher Doug Davis’ sacrifice fly gave Milwaukee a 6-0 advantage.
Rickie Weeks walked to set up Counsell's slam for a 10-0 lead.
Davis wasn't particularly sharp, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, in the no-decision as Washington connected for four runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to make it 10-7.
Claudio Vargas (2-0) got the win in relief for the Brewers.
Ivan Rodriguez continued his hot early-season hitting for Washington by going 3-for-5, raising the catcher’s average to .444.
