Oscar Salazar delivered a pinch-hit single in the bottom of the ninth to score Scott Hairston and give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday.
Hairston led off the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Tony Gwynn Jr. before Salazar came through with a one-out single off reliever George Sherrill (1-2).
Padres closer Heath Bell (5-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief as San Diego extended its National League West lead to 3 1/2 games over San Francisco and seven games over Los Angeles.
The Dodgers had just three hits Thursday against five different pitchers.
San Diego strung together three singles in the first inning with Chase Headley driving in Jerry Hairston Jr. with the third of those hits.
Los Angeles tied the game in the second on James Loney’s leadoff homer, his eighth of the season.
The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Yorvit Torrealba’s double to center. The Dodgers tied the score in the following inning on Garret Anderson’s pinch-hit single.
San Diego pitcher Mat Latos gave up two runs – one earned -- and two hits while struck out seven in five innings.
