Manny Ramirez had an RBI double to drive in the only run and three pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers won 1-0 Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Dodgers Stadium.
The win gave the Dodgers a 1/2-game lead over the San Diego Padres, who lost to the New York Mets to relinquish the National League West lead.
Ramirez hit a one-out ground-rule double off of Kyle McClellan in the eighth inning to score Rafael Furcal, who opened the frame with a single off Trever Miller (0-1) to win the first two of the three-game series.
Closer Jonathan Broxton earned his 15th save and Hong-Chih Kuo (2-1) earned the win with a scoreless eighth.
The two starters – St. Louis’ Chris Carpenter and Los Angeles’ Hiroki Kuroda – nearly matched each other pitch for pitch in getting no-decisions.
Carpenter went seven innings, allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five. Kuroda was even better in his seven innings, yielding four hits, one walk and six strikeouts.
