Mat Gamel delivered his first hit of the season in the 10th inning to help the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday to avoid a season sweep at Minute Maid Park.
Corey Hart doubled three times and Rickie Weeks and Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee, which had lost its five previous games here this season and 10 of their last 14 games overall.
Houston rallied from a 5-0 deficit for six runs on six singles in the fifth inning, but back-to-back doubles by Hart and Braun in the ninth against Brandon Lyon forced extra innings.
Carlos Gomez led off the 10th with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Jason Castro. Gomez scored when Gamel doubled down the right-field line and Jonathan LeCroy then singled home Gamel to provide some insurance.
John Axford (8-1) pitched two innings to pick up the win.
Houston, which did not have a hit in any other inning but the sixth, had won 23 of their last 35 games.
