Paul Maholm pitched the second shutout of his career and Garrett Jones homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates pounded out 19 hits en route to a 9-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Ronny Cedeno went 4-for-4 and Andrew McCutchen drove in a pair for the Pirates, who have scored 21 runs over the past two games after managing just 19 total during a seven-game losing streak that ended Saturday.
Maholm (6-7), who had not pitched a complete game since the 2008 campaign, allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. The left-hander struck out one and needed 103 pitches to work his way through nine innings.
Roy Oswalt (6-11) started for Houston and lasted just four innings before being pulled with an ankle contusion suffered when he has hit by a line drive in the second inning. The veteran right-hander was charged with two runs on seven hits in the loss.
Pittsburgh jumped on Oswalt with two runs in the second on Ryan Doumit’s RBI double and an run-scoring single from Lastings Milledge. With Oswalt out of the game in the fifth, the Pirates went to work, pushing two across in the fifth on Jones’ homer, two more in the sixth on McCutchen’s two-run single and three in the eighth to put it away.
