Jose Tabata, Neil Walker and Lastings Milledge each drove in two runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ offense exploded in a 12-6 win over the Houston Astros on Saturday.
Rookie Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones each added a pair of hits and an RBI for the Pirates, who snapped a seven-game slide.
Pittsburgh jumped out with two runs in the first but watched that lead evaporate when Houston came back to put four runs on the board in the second.
But instead of folding as they have done all season, the Pirates battled back immediately when Tabata doubled in a pair in the bottom of the frame. The Astros grabbed another lead with two runs in the fifth, but again Pittsburgh stormed back in the bottom of the frame with two more runs to regain the lead.
They didn’t quit there, adding two more in the sixth when Walker singled in a run and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and another three in the eighth to put it away.
Six different relievers combined to allow two runs on two hits over the final 7 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh, with Javier Lopez (2-1) getting credit for the win.
