Mat Latos tossed eight shutout innings and Scott Hairston belted a pair of home runs to lead the San Diego Padres to a 7-0 win over the Houston Astros on Friday.
Chase Headley had two hits, including a homer, and drove in a pair for San Diego, which snapped a five-game losing skid at Minute Maid Park and climbed back atop the National League West by half a game.
Latos (2-3) turned his best outing of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out a career-best nine batters.
Hairston’s first homer and Headley’s blast made it 4-0 in the second inning. Latos added a ground-rule double in the fourth and Hairston went deep again in the eighth.
Houston starter Bud Norris (1-4) was tagged with four runs on five hits in four innings. He struck out seven and walked three.
Kaz Matsui’s double in the ninth was the Astros’ third hit of the contest and lone extra-base knock.
