Ryan Howard homered and drove in six runs and Cole Hamels extended his scoreless innings streak to 25 as the Phialdelphia Phillies topped the Florida Marlins, 10-6, on Wednesday.
Chase Utley drove in two and scored a pair and Carlos Ruiz added an RBI for the Phillies, who maintained a one-half game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East.
Philadelphia wasted little time jumping all over Marlins left-hander Andrew Miller as Howard sent a two-run single into right field with just one out in the first. The Phillies added another in the second, one more in the third on Ruiz’s single before Howard split the game open in the fourth.
Miller (1-1) retired the first batter of the frame before allowing back-to-back singles to Placido Polanco and Utley. Howard then launched his 28th homer of the season out to deep left to push it to 7-0.
That was plenty of support for Hamels (10-10), who allowed just four hits while striking out five and walking one in seven scoreless innings. The left-hander has won three in a row without allowing a run and has 26 strikeouts against five walks in his last four outings.
Florida attempted to mount a comeback with a six-run eighth inning, but the deficit was too large.
