Wil Venable hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday in the opener of a three-game set.
Venable connected off Marlins starter Chris Volstad to break a scoreless tie and give the Padres a 2-0 lead. Pinch hitter Oscar Salazar added an RBI single in the frame and the San Diego bullpen made the lead stand in support of starter Clayton Richard.
Richard (5-4) earned the win, going six innings and allowing five hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Three San Diego relievers each pitched an inning to complete the shutout.
Luke Gregerson struck out one in the seventh, Mike Adams worked around a hit and had a strikeout in the eighth and Heath Bell allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but struck out two to record his 20th save of the season.
Volstad (4-7) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out six but gave up three straight hits in the top of the seventh, including the home run by Venable before being relieved.
Hanley Ramirez went 3-for-4 for the Marlins.
