Matt Holliday had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs and Adam Wainwright pitched seven solid innings in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 4-2 victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday.
David Freese and Ryan Ludwick each drove in runs as all of the game’s scoring came in the first two innings.
Wainwright (6-2) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out eight batters to lower his ERA to 2.49 on the season.
Closer Ryan Franklin worked the ninth for 10th save.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the second inning, highlighted by Holliday’s two-run double that scored Felipe Lopez and Ludwick for the 4-2 advantage.
Florida starter Nate Robertson (4-4) surrender four runs on six hits with four walks in six innings to suffer the loss.
The Marlins staked a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Hanley Ramirez singled to left to score Chris Coghlan and Dan Uggla followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Gaby Sanchez.
