Aaron Rowand homered and Barry Zito pitched seven-plus strong innings to lead the San Francisco Giants past the Florida Marlins, 3-2, on Wednesday.
Bengie Molina added an RBI and Sergio Romo worked out of an eighth-inning jam for the Giants, who have won four of five to put pressure on the San Diego Padres at the top of the National League West.
Rowand, who forced extra-innings with a ninth-inning homer on Tuesday, plated a run in the third with a groundout and led off the sixth with a solo shot off Nate Robertson (2-3) to push San Francisco up, 2-0. Molina plated Pablo Sandoval with a single later in the frame to complete the scoring for the Giants.
Zito moved to 5-0 in 2010 and lowered his ERA to 1.49 by scattering seven hits and yielding one run. The left-hander took a shutout into the eighth inning before a series of singles gave Florida its lone run.
Zito left with the bases loaded and none out but Romo struck out Hanley Ramirez and forced Jorge Cantu into a double play to end the threat.
Brian Wilson allowed a run in the ninth but recovered to earn his fifth save.
Ronny Paulino and Gaby Sanchez each had two hits for the Marlins, who fell one game below .500 to 13-14.
