Edinson Volquez threw eight innings of three-hit, one-run ball to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
Jim Edmonds hit his 11th dinger in the bottom of the second inning, but had to leave the game after he strained his right lower leg during his home run trot.
Edmonds was filling in at first base for Joey Votto, who was a late scratch with a sinus infection. Miguel Cairo came on for Edmonds and chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI. Cincinnati was 3-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Volquez (4-3) got it done by keeping the ball down all night, getting 15 groundouts compared to no flyouts. He struck out six and walked three.
The Cincinnati bullpen almost blew it again, however. Francisco Cordero allowed a couple of runs in the ninth and had the tying run on third with two outs, but he struck Carlos Gomez out to earn his 38th save of the year.
Milwaukee starter Dave Bush (7-13) gave up four runs – two earned – on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings.
