Skip Schumaker's eighth-inning single was his only hit of the day, but it helped the St. Louis Cardinals break open a tie and move on to a 6-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon.

Schumaker's base hit, which scored pinch runner Jaime Garcia from third base with what proved to be the winning run, helped St. Louis open the floodgates in a three-run inning.

Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday followed with bases-loaded walks and provided enough run support as the Cardinals won for the sixth time in seven contests.

Dennys Reyes blew the save for the Cardinals, but closer Ryan Franklin (1-0) came in with two outs in the eighth inning and picked up the victory with two strikeouts in a perfect 1 1/3 innings of work.

David Freese's second home run of the year gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Cincinnati got the run back in the seventh inning on an Orlando Cabrera sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, a double by Pujols plated Schumaker, and Pujols came home on Holliday's single to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. Cincinnati got both runs back in its half of the eighth on a single by Joey Votto and a sacrifice fly by Scott Rolen.

Carlos Fisher (0-1) took the loss for Cincinnati as he gave up two runs in one inning.
