Randy Wells had a big day at the plate and on the mound to help the Chicago Cubs to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Wells (7-13) allowed only one run on five hits while striking out five, while also chipping in a pair of RBI singles.
The Cubs jumped on Cardinals National League Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright early, scoring five runs through four innings, but he settled down after that. Wainwright (18-11) didn’t allow another run the rest of the way and ended up striking out eight while walking just one over eight innings.
Fernando Salas came on in the ninth and gave up a two-run single to Xavier Nady, who finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Darwin Barney was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Tyler Colvin added a couple of hits for the Cubs.
Colby Rasmus had two hits and his 22 home run of the year in the ninth inning. Yadier Molina also added a pair of hits for the Cardinals.
