Ike Davis went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, while Ruben Tejada hit his first major league home run and drove in five runs to power the New York Mets to an 18-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs Sunday at Wrigley Field.
The Mets took the lead with a five-run fifth inning in which Davis had an RBI single and Tejada added a two-run single. New York added five more runs to its cushion in the eighth, with Davis' two-run homer and Angel Pagan's two-run double doing the bulk of the damage. The Mets batted around a third time and scored five more in the ninth to avoid a three-game sweep.
Seven players had multiple hits for the Mets, who totalled a season-high 21 hits.
Cubs starter Ryan Dempster (12-10) didn't get out of the fifth, allowing seven runs -- but only three earned -- on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked four and struck out five.
Left-hander Jonathon Niese (9-7) was the beneficiary of the Mets' big day at the plate, earning the win after allowing five runs on eight hits over six innings. Niese also drove in two runs.
Aramis Ramirez and Geovany Soto hit home runs for the Cubs. Ramirez was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Soto also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
