Jake Westbrook earned his first win as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals and Albert Pujols homered in a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Friday.
Matt Holliday added two hits and an RBI and John Jay drove in a run for the Cardinals, who have won four straight.
Westbrook (7-7) had failed to break into the win column in either of his first two starts despite strong outings but managed to sneak in on Friday, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three in six innings. The veteran sinkerballer recorded 14 groundouts against three flyouts.
The Cubs struck in the first inning on Marlon Byrd’s two-run single. St. Louis battled back, grabbing a run in the bottom half of the inning on Pujols’ 29th homer of the season and taking the lead with two runs in the third when Holliday reached Thomas Diamond (0-3) for an RBI double and Yadier Molina added a sacrifice fly.
Jay plated his run with a single in the fourth and the Cardinals added two more in the seventh to put it away.
Cardinals closer Ryan Franklin tossed a scoreless ninth for his 21st save.
