Ryan Hanigan drove in a career-best five runs and Aaron Harang struck out a season-high nine to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 14-2 victory over the visiting Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
Hanigan went 3-for-4 and hit his first career grand slam in the eighth inning to cap 11 consecutive Cincinnati runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Drew Stubbs went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Brandon Phillips went 3-for-5 for the Reds, who had 15 hits.
Harang (2-4) allowed just two runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.
The Reds led 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Gomes singled in two runs with the bases loaded to fuel a five-run inning. Joey Votto and Gomes, who was on the second, both scored on Stubbs’ infield single later in the inning. Stubbs came around to score on Hanigan’s double.
Votto hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to get the Reds started and Gomes drove in his first run of the game with a third-inning single to make it 3-0.
Marlon Byrd had a run-scoring single in the sixth and Xavier Nady drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh for Chicago.
Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) struck out nine in six innings for the Cubs. He gave up three runs and nine hits.
