Edinson Volquez overcame control issues and the Cincinnati Reds capitalized on a costly error as they defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Saturday.
Volquez (2-1) issued five walks on Sunday, but only yielded three hits in five innings while striking out six. His only run allowed came on a second-inning home run by Alex Gonzalez.
Volquez’s counterpart on the mound, Braves starter Tommy Hanson, also pitched well, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in 7 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Unfortunately for Hanson (8-8), his defense let him down.
Cincinnati tied the score in the fifth in a Brandon Phillips RBI triple with two outs. Orlando Cabrera followed by hitting a ground ball to the shortstop Gonzalez, who dropped the ball and allowed Cabrera to beat the throw and Phillips to score.
Jordan Smith, Bill Bray and Nick Masset each threw one hitless inning of relief and Francisco Cordero worked the ninth for his 29th save of the season.
Cabrera led the Reds by going 2-for-4, while Omar Infante was 2-for-4 as well for Atlanta, which finished its nine-game road trip with a record of 3-6.
