Wes Helms hit a walk-off single in the 11th inning, leading the Florida Marlins to a 5-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.
The Marlins loaded the bases against Jesse Chavez (2-2) and Helms, who had a two-run triple earlier in the game, drove a single to left field that scored Hanley Ramirez.
It was the Marlins’ second walk-off win of the series and fourth of the week. Donnie Murphy won Friday’s opener with a single in the ninth.
Brian McCann, Eric Hinske and Alex Gonzalez each drove in a run for the Braves, who finished 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. As a result Atlanta lost just its second series since May 10.
Florida carried a 4-3 lead into the eighth, but pinch-hitter Chipper Jones tied it with a two-out, RBI double to center field off Clay Hensley.
It remained that way until the Marlins finally broke through in the 11th. Former Brave Jorge Sosa (2-2) allowed three hits in two innings to earn the win.
Atlanta left the bases loaded in the seventh inning before Jones tied it in the eighth. It also had the bases loaded in the top of the 11th but again were unable to convert.
