Willie Harris’ run-scoring single with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Washington Nationals a 3-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves Thursday night.
Harris came on as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded and promptly lined a single to center off Peter Moylan through the drawn-in infield to break a 2-2 tie.
Adam Kennedy had started the ninth with a walk off Eric O’Flaherty (1-1) before Ryan Zimmerman greeted Moylan with a double to right. Moylan intentionally walked pinch-hitter Cristian Guzman to load the bases before Harris secured the winning hit.
Washington starter Scott Olsen was the early story as he had a no-hitter going for 7 1/3 innings before David Ross broke it up with a single. Another single and a throwing error from Zimmerman ended Olsen’s night and pinch-hitter Jason Heyward greeted right-hander Tyler Clippard (4-0) with a two-run single to left that tied the game.
Olsen had allowed only a third-inning walk to Melky Cabrera before his eighth-inning troubles. It marked his third consecutive solid start as he had thrown 13 consecutive scoreless innings coming in.
Washington couldn’t give Olsen much support against Braves starter Tim Hudson, but solo homers from Ivan Rodriguez in the fifth and Adam Dunn in the seventh made it 2-0.
