Matt Diaz’s one-out, run-scoring single in the top of the 10th inning gave the Atlanta Braves a 7-6 victory over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night.
Troy Glaus singled off Matt Capps (0-1) to start the 10th and Brandon Hicks came on as a pinch-runner. Melky Cabrera’s sacrifice bunt moved Hicks to second and Diaz followed with a single to right to break the tie.
Kris Medlen (1-1) got the win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning and Billy Wagner closed it out in the 10th for his third save.
Washington forced extra innings when Josh Willingham had a two-run, pinch-hit single in the eighth to even the score.
Ian Desmond homered for the second straight game for the Nationals and Nyjer Morgan continued his solid hitting of late with a 3-for-5 effort.
The Braves surrendered the lead three times in hanging on for the win. Omar Infante hit a two-run shot in the second off Luis Atilano for the 2-1 advantage. Nate McLouth and Martin Prado produced runs in the sixth to make it 6-4.
Atlanta’s young outfielder Jason Heyward left in the second with a strained groin and is being listed as day-to-day.
